Hello! :) I found this page by googling “Aberystwyth University Malaysian Society” Soooo, I will most probably go to Aber in this year but im still thinking though. I was wondering is it true that in Aber there’s no malls or cinema or whatsoever ? I know this may sound a bit shallow but I’ve been living in KL my whole life & im kind of used to the city life. If the answer is yes, what do you to for fun? Where do you guys watch the latest movies? Are there a lot of Malaysians there? I hope you would spare a minute for this lost child here :) Thank you!
hi, good evening. If you read on my subsequent posts related to Aber, you will know how much I enjoyed my year there.
There's no mall. But there are a fair amount of fashion boutique like Dorothy Perkins, New Look, Monsoon. No doubt Aber is a small tiny town, but you can get almost everything there. Best part, everyone is really really friendly there.
Cinema. There is a cinema in town. They do show new movies. We also have a 3D cinema in the art center and they sometime will play some good old movies. It's in the Art Center and it serve the purpose to promote art. So it don't always play the newest movie.
There are LOTS of activities that my friends and I do for fun. We hit the bar/club almost every night as it's really really cheap and just walking distance. There's a sports center with an indoor pool, gym, badminton court, basketball court... just name it.
You can join societies where they will plan activities! Some of my friends even went hiking all the way to Borth.
Over the easter break, students tend to travel around. But I stayed back and had some quiet days to myself. As for summer, people will start having BBQ, sun tanning, going to the beach etc.
I can tell you, ALL of my Aber mates did not regret going to Aber. Aber may be really small and seems dull, but Aber have this unexplainable charm. All of us been wishing to go back to Aber.
Oh! If you join the Malaysian Society, you may be even busier with the preparation of the annual Malaysian Night. But one thing, during CNY, it will be really really depressing for people who celebrates it. Lucky for me, the Art centre had CNY fair that year and I can get a bit of home from that fair.
What else... I like to jog along the prom every morning even during winter. I prefer to walk to town and I live in campus up the hill. I enjoy the whole scenery and the breeze when I walk around.
Not sure if there are going to be a lot of Malaysian for your year, but my year, there was closed to 200. 1 advise from me, go out and have fun! Make more friends there. Don't just hang out with Malaysian. As locals will bring you to places that Malaysian dont usually know. Explore the place. I strongly believe you will love it. Don't just stay in your room and study whole year long. Hey, I partied every night and I still get a 2.1 degree in Law, I believe you can too ;)
Just enjoy your year(s) there!!! You wont regret!!
One last thing about the charm of Aber, we have Aber Alumni here in KL. We'll have annual dinner and this year, the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan was with us too! Don't mention also all other seniors that you'll be meeting!!
Nichole :)
PS: I'm also a city girl living in extreme extreme city life. Hated kampung and what not. But I love love love Aber.
Hi Nichole,
I am going Aber in September! :) May I know where can i join the malaysian society page. do they have a facebook page? I have so many questions in mind and it will be great if I can talk to someone.
Thank You so much :)
